I really believe that by teaching yoga I can play a role in changing the world for the better.  My whole adult life that’s what I’ve been trying to do, and I think I’ve finally found something that works for who I am.

I’ve always been somebody who has wanted to make the world a better place by my actions.  I’ve been involved in environmental groups, protested against wars and industry, I opened and ran a store for a couple years selling eco-products, I organized Earth Day events, gave speeches and did interviews on environmental issues, had a car that ran on veggie oil, went door to door to garner votes for Obama.

Teaching yoga is extremely satisfying because I can feel people’s energy has change in the class.  There is less stress, less tension, and more light and kindness.  To me, that’s amazing!   You know, even if that feeling the student has doesn’t go beyond the class (which I know it does) I feel I have still played some small role in adding a bit of peace to the world, for a few people, for that period of time.  I’ve never found anything that is more rewarding, or gives me such a direct connection to a feeling of transformation toward a more positive world.

My feeling is, what if everyone, I mean EVERYONE, had that sense of peace once a day.  It doesn’t have to be yoga, it just needs to be a realization that peace is available even when things aren’t so great.   From my limited experience, when people are in a state of connection to their own light, the last thing they want to do is fight — why would you want to do that when you are so happy??

So, I teach because there is nothing more satisfying for me than to facilitate, in some small way, students recognizing their own goodness and their own wonderful light.
