The other night we were walking our old, tired dog. At this point if we don’t walk him before we go to bed then we have to get up in the middle of the night, no matter how much we don’t want to do it. We really didn’t want to walk him, but grudgingly did. Once we got outside, though, we were happy we were out there. The main reason was seeing the fireflies. The “firefly season” has just started, and so the first few were flying around. I truly love fireflies – they made for a great walk.
I’ve thought about how the fireflies illumination pulsing on and off is a lot like our own inner illumination. Sometimes we are really bright, sometimes it’s hard to recognize our inner light. The important thing to realize is that we always have that potential for brightness, we just don’t always see it, or recognize it in ourselves. But, if we just keep cruising along, like the firefly, our pulsing illumination will make the whole world a better place to be. The work is in remembering that.
