I’ll be teaching a new series called Six Weeks to Handstand. The first class being Thursday, September 16th from 7:30-9pm at Evolution Yoga. I want to explain a bit about my intention for the series, since I’ve been getting questions about it from students. My idea for the series is to have a period of time where we can really focus in on one posture and vastly improve at being able to do it. Before I started teaching I always thought it would have been great to get together with other students and really work on different postures. This is my version of that.
In this series you’ll be with fellow students having fun working toward getting better at handstand. My job is to lead everyone to a greater confidence and understanding of the how to do it, and to make sure we’re all having fun and not taking it to seriously. This is really a chance to gain the knowledge and ability to have a better handstand, or at least have real clarity at what you need to do to be a great “handstander”. Is it just me, or do we all have dreams of hanging out in the park and easily being able to go up into handstand with confidence, and ecstatic joy. 🙂
Also, this will be an open, workshop environment. There will be conversion and working together. It will be a chance for students to get to know each other better, and to not only improve their handstands but to improve their whole practice.
I also want this to be more than the six sessions in class. I’ll give students “homework” that I’d want people to work on. I also will be open and available to answer any questions or help people outside of the series. This truly is an opportunity to really focus and work to deepen your understanding of how to do handstand in a great setting — I hope to see you there!
Finally, here’s answers to a couple questions I’ve got from students…
Do I need to have a handstand to do the class…or, do I need to NOT have a handstand to do the series?
This is an all levels series. I would love people to take the series who are struggling to get a handstand at the wall and aren’t able to get there. I also would love people to come who have a good handstand but want to have insights on how to get it better. In fact, I feel that the more diverse the group in handstand ability the better. We will be doing a lot of work in pairs and small groups, and so I believe that it’s only helpful to see people at different levels than yourself. I don’t recommend the class for absolute beginners who don’t yet have a grasp on alignment, though. I don’t think this series would actually be that much fun for students at that very beginner level.
Will we being handstands the whole time?
My intention is to lead people to a better handstand, not to do so many handstands that no one will ever want to do a handstand again. In reality, I don’t know anybody that can hold a handstand for more than a minute or so. Doing a handstand for and hour and half would be a bummer. In reality, we might not even do that many handstands. What we will work on is how to do handstands with good alignment so we can still be doing handstands when we’re 90. Good alignment makes yoga easier and safer, so good alignment is really important here. Once we have strong alignment we’ll work on strengthening and practicing handstands and have some good fun.
